Today, a deaf teenager was telling me about a project she's doing for school. She's learning about Deaf cul.ture (don't want that bad boy googled.). She does not identify herself as "capital-D-Deaf." She was talking about a book she was reading and apparently, most paragraphs started with "As a Deaf person, you should..." My little friend was all fired up. She kept saying, "It's the stupidest book in the world!" I asked why she was so bothered by it and she said...
"Because! You should just... just... be a PERSON!"
I can handle just being a person.
