The Chipmunk is 6 months old now. Can you believe it? She is still super mini at a whole 12 lbs 8.5 oz and 23.75 inches. She's on her own little growth curve, but at least she is growing! We are still breastfeeding and she recently started solids. I'm pureeing her food and it's working out great. I know exactly what she's eating and it's really easy to do. She's hitting all of her milestones right on time. She is happy, smiley, and high maintenance. We love her "feistyness" and hope to find a good way to help her channel it.
But I am so tired.
I'm working full time in an emotionally exhausting job. Thankfully I work with women who nursed their babes and are very supportive of my thrice a day pumping habit so there's no pressure there. Pumping is hard work, though. I hate having to raid my freezer stash if I don't get what I need for her for the next day and sometimes I do fall short. My job is an hour commute one way. The Chipmunk is in daycare near the house since my husband works from home. It works out better that way. She's a crummy napper, though, so there are a lot of days that I come home from work and only get 15 minutes or so with her before she nurses and goes down for bed. It blows. It blows a lot. There are days where I just wonder why I'm working and then days where I remind myself that I don't have the kind of job that can be a part time gig. I would suck at being a SAHM. I love my daughter, but I need my work too. I just wish it didn't feel so "this or that."
She still wakes up twice a night, but her pedi says a lot of that is because she so small that she legitimately still needs to eat at night. Thankfully she goes right back down, but I don't know when the last time I had a full night's sleep was.
I've had to, um, lower my standards in the cleanliness arena. If I want to see my kid on the weekends, I need to not be cleaning. She's a catnapper, so there isn't much I can get done while she naps. I can do some things while I wear her (she likes to vacuum with me), but getting down on the floor with her so I can actually know that my child gets on all fours and tries to crawl seems way more important than scrubbing toilets.
My friendships are suffering. I had made some lovely new IF friends before she was born and I haven't seen them since they were so nice to stop by and meet her. One of these ladies even had her own baby and I'm such a shit I haven't even met her yet. Some days I have to force myself to answer some emails or call someone because I'm just. so. tired. It's not fair to them, but it's so hard to balance it all.
I take the babe for walks on weekends and that's about the extent of the exercise. With the babe still waking up at night, I hit the hay early so I can get my 40 winks. Oh, and sex? It's happened twice. It's my anniversary and I'm blogging. What can I say. We're both too wiped to think about it.
Both of our families are plane rides away. There is no respite care for us. We do have close and trusted friends, but they all live near my office... an hour away. I don't want to cart Chipmunk to their houses, nor do I want them to interrupt their family lives to drive way the heck to my house so I can scrub a floor, or run to Walgreens, or take a damn nap! Truth be told, I'm not so sure I want a break. I only get so much time with this one baby at this one stage in her life.
When she wakes up at night, my first thought is, "Sweet Jesus am I tired!" My second is, "Yay! Baby cuddles!" There really is a huge sense of appreciation for every moment. When she doesn't feel well, I'm crushed that she's uncomfortable, but I'm so full of love and absolutely recognize how close I was to never being able to comfort a child. I feel like I've been entrusted with such a special little person. I just hope I'm giving her enough.
So here I am, being a mediocre wife, crummy friend, okay employee, and the best mom I can muster. I'm hoping it's all enough and that eventually it all just melds into the best me I can be.
Oh, and I'm a shitty blogger. It's past my bedtime so I'm going to post these incoherent ramblings without proofreading. Good night!
I've managed to find a handful of y'all on Facebook, but if you want to find me you need my real email address. If you don't have it and would like to connect, just hit me up and hapahopes@gmail.com and I'll share it with you.

This post made me want to reach through my phone to give you a hug. Lady, I completely get it because we're struggling with similar issues. Between being sleep deprived, trying to keep my career afloat, keeping the house from looking like hoarders love there and trying to remain in contact with friends, all while trying to be the best other possible, it's all overwhelming. So give yourself permission to let go and know that you are doing an amazing job even if it feels like you're failing. I promise that things will get easier as Chipmunk grows. Just hang on there. Sending love.
ReplyDeleteI could use the hug and I bet you could too!
DeleteI agree with Cristy. Whether your baby is 3, 6, or 12 months old. Working and being a mommy are TOUGH. Make sure you take time for yourself. Things will get easier. She will sleep longer stretches someday. Your attitude is perfect - and you are the perfect mommy for her. HUGS! I know how you feel!
ReplyDeleteWhere is that time for myself? I keep looking for it!
DeleteI'm so glad to hear from you! The first year is SO hard (emotionally, physically, spiritually...). And Cristy is right - it really does get easier. I hope you're able to be kind to yourself and just focus on those sweet moments with your daughter. Lifting you up in prayer.
ReplyDeleteSweet moments they are! Thanks. :)
DeleteOh Goodness! It's really good to hear from you. I don't know of any mom that is okay when they are not getting a full night's sleep...so nothing else counts until that happens. I don't know if you're in the mood for advice, or brainstorming or discussing the details or whatever, but if you are, hit me up!
ReplyDeleteOh and sex...I think we are at 4x...in 18 months. :/
Thanks lady. I just night do that.
DeleteDude if you weren't feeling this way, you wouldn't have a 6 month old baby! We all are so happy for you and are not expecting you to have amazing powers of doing ALL things. Geez, we would all kinda hate you if that were the case. We all drop outta society; My experience was that it was like a year to come up for air and more like 18 months til I felt normal and rebalance. I hope it is sooner for you, but goodness, you grew a human and pushed it out of your body and it declines sleep! Cut yourself a little slack on the toilet sanitation :)
ReplyDeleteMy poor toilets. Actually, J is weird about toilets so they are okay, but the mirrors!?!? Grossness. And I don't even want to know about the shower stall.
DeleteMotherhood is exhausting. I can't even imagine working full time right now. You're doing an amazing job!
ReplyDeleteGirl, I can't even believe you're reading a blog right now! :)
DeleteOh I'm so glad I'm not alone! I'm not working, so I can't fully relate or imagine how tough it would be. But I resonate with so much of what you say anyways. And I agree with Amanda... you have an awesome attitude!!! Your little girl is so lucky to have you for a mom. You are doing a great job. Let me know if you need any support/encouragement/venting at any time!
ReplyDeleteThanks. You guys are great.
DeleteOMG I used to think this too when C was 6 months old. The truth is - if you feel this way, you're doing it exactly right! Way to go mamma. It will get better very soon I promise. Seriously, each month that passes, it gets exponentially easier than the last. Hang in there, you're doing such a wonderful job.
ReplyDeleteOkay! I'll keep on keepin' on!
DeleteI SO feel you, love. It does get a little better - though I don't know that the tiredness is going anywhere. Little Chipmunk is ADORABLE. x
ReplyDeleteI'm learning to really love coffee.
DeleteGlad to see an update from you! I'm sure everyone else already said it but thus sounds totally normal! It's hard being a mom and working full time AND having that commute on top of everything (trust me - my commute is just as long and often longer!). And pumping just really sucks :) And she is 6 months so that's just a huge transition anyway, but you will get through it. You are a strong mama who is doing the best she can and that's all that matters! Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteI am back to working full time and I basically get home in time to put the girls to bed. It makes me sad I don't get to spend more time with them and I am totally neglecting friends and my blog (um notice I am commenting on your 3 week old blog post?) and cleaning. I just remind myself that this all-consuming phase isn't forever and as they get older things will balance out. I am grateful for all the time I get to spend with them and hopefully my friends will understand and still be there. She will eventually sleep through the night as she gets bigger and you will feel like a totally different person. Until then, hang in there and enjoy all the baby cuddles you can.
